CDL Jobs That Don't Have You Over-the-Road.
Most of the jobs you hear about while obtaining your commercial driver’s license are those that require you to drive over-the-road, and it’s true that most people who begin their career in trucking often start off with driving long hauls. This is for the reasons that the experience gained from driving over the road is immense, and/or an individual is sold on a life where they are traveling the country and are free from a 9 to 5 job.
As true as it is that over-the-road driving is recommended when beginning your trucking career, another truth is that there are several other CDL-related positions that do not involve over the road driving, and some, not requiring you to drive at all. Having some driving experience will surely maximize your chances as a candidate for these various CDL-related positions, so should you already have some under your belt or are currently obtaining that experience, these are positions to consider as a CDL holder:
- Local/Regional Driver (specialty cargo hauler, delivery driver, etc.)
- Supervisor/Manager (e.g., construction sites)
- CDL instructor
- Terminal Manager
- Owner/Operator (self-employer truck driver)
- Bus Driver
- Dispatcher/Logistics Coordinator
