Trucking is one of the most important industries that majority of other industries depend on in order to maintain and increase productivity in their businesses. Trucks transport and handle more cargo than any other form of transportation- ships, trains, you name it. Logistics by trucks are involved in every step of the process of a given product. From transporting materials to having them manufactured, to the delivery of the final product at your local retailer, this is all dependent on that of a truck.
The driver shortage continues to be an issue- even with over 3 million CDL drivers currently working, there is still an approximate 50,000+ drivers needed to fill various positions in the industry.
The unfortunate reason for this shortage is due to the age gap between seasoned drivers and newer drivers. The number of drivers approaching retirement is at a significant percentage higher than new hires.
Trucking is the perfect chance to climb from your current situation, whether unemployed or underemployed and longing for more, to a standard they can truly be proud to call their own as they are enabled to support themselves and their families.
So what is the average salary of a truck driver?
Most of the jobs you hear about while obtaining your commercial driver’s license are those that require you to drive over-the-road, and it’s true that most people who begin their career in trucking often start off with driving long hauls. This is for the reasons that the experience gained from driving over the road is immense, and/or an individual is sold on a life where they are traveling the country and are free from a 9 to 5 job.
We're excited for the Job Fair this Saturday and all of the opportunites that will be available to our attendees. We want to see you succeed in your trucking career. For this Saturday's job fair, be prepared by following these helpful tips:

If you’ve been considering getting your CDL (Commercial Driver’s License), NOW is the time! Getting your CDL and a career in trucking is a great investment to make for your future. Let’s review the top 5 reasons:
- You don’t need much to begin:
All you need is your driver’s license and be able to pass a DOT physical and drug screen.
Company recruiters like Schneider, Werner, Stevens Transport, and US Express (to name a few), visit our campuses on a regular basis. They do this to meet with you, the future truck driver. Who better to answer your questions about the companies that may potentially employ you? It's important to know what questions to ask in order to be completely informed about the industry, as well as specific companies you may be interested in. Ideally, these are the top questions we recommend you ask:
1. Where are your orientations held?
At Smith & Solomon we stay on top of all trucking-industry related news and updates. Before you can drive commercial trucks for a living, you will need some truck driver training. After receiving this training, you can take a test to get your commercial driver's license, or CDL, which will allow you to begin applying for jobs. There are many private driving schools located all over the country, so you will have a number of choices when seeking this education.
Once you finish up at your CDL training school, you will have to begin the job search process. This is often more difficult than attending classes and learning how to drive a truck, as this is a very competitive industry. You will want to carefully research the locations at which you will apply to ensure that you are getting on with a reputable organization that will treat you well. At the same time, you will have to prepare yourself for the interview process and hope that you are chosen for a profitable position.
As we are still a couple of days away from the "official" 1st day of summer, temperatures have already begun to rise....and so does the amount of traffic on the roads. While it's exciting to think of the beach and future vacation plans, so should you think about practicing additional safety while traveling this season.
Truck drivers are in high demand in nearly every economy, since they are responsible for transporting goods around the country. As a result, those who take the plunge and enroll in a truck driving school can expect to find work quite quickly after graduation. At the same time, however, driving a truck leads to a much different lifestyle than working at a warehouse in town, so make sure that you are prepared for these differences before choosing this as a career.
Get the Training
When you make the decision to become a truck driver, the next step is to get some commercial drivers license training. This training will prepare you for everything that is on the test that you must pass to get your license, while also providing you with access to experienced trainers who can answer your questions on the industry. Completing this training is important for your career, as it gives you a better chance of passing the test, which will put you on track for a job in the trucking industry.
Driving a commercial truck is not an easy job, as you have a large vehicle and a heavy load to account for every time you head out on the road. Because of this level of difficulty, getting the proper CDL training before you apply for your license is a good idea. While you can learn on the road, as long as someone with a license accompanies you, taking a training course ensures that you have all of the necessary knowledge and gives you the best chance of passing the tests.
Before you can legally drive a forklift in the United States, you are required to undergo some forklift operator training. This training is monitored by the Occupational Safety and Hazard Administration to ensure that the workplace stays as safe as possible and that people who do not know how to safely operate a forklift do not drive them. It is the employer's responsibility to make sure that every employee who is required to drive a forklift has this training. You, therefore, can make yourself more employable by getting this certification before applying for a job.
In the United States, a CDL license is a certificate that permits you to drive a vehicle with a gross weight of 26,000 or more pounds. Generally, this weight limit is reserved for tractor-trailers and buses, although you might find a few other vehicles that exceed this limit under certain circumstances. Driving a vehicle that is above this limit without the license is illegal, so you will need to get your permit if you plan to work in the trucking industry.
Find a Job
Linden, New Jersey, May 14, 2014: After months of preparation and much anticipation, it was with great satisfaction that Smith & Solomon’s Annual Job Fair exceeded their own expectations, as well as those of the companies that were in attendance. The turnout of attendance between companies and the public was a success. In comparison to last year’s event, the attendance of vendors had almost doubled, as the need for drivers also continues to increase at a staggering rate.
Every other month there is an Open House held at Smith & Solomon campuses. This is made feasible to give every prospective student an in-depth idea about our CDL programs, our lifetime job placement assistance, and life in the trucking industry after they graduate. It is encouraged for everyone interested in getting their CDL to attend an Open House to assist in finding out whether this is a career choice fit for them.
Here are some of the things that are covered during an Open House event at Smith & Solomon:
Tuscaloosa, AL -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/22/2014 -- The Trucking Industry has seen a fluctuation in the past few years but the future is very bright on the horizon as trucking is considered one of the best jobs of the future. Trucking jobs are projected to increase by almost 200,000 new jobs by 2022.
- Why trucking jobs are expected to increase
Smith & Solomon, an industry leader in truck driver training for over 20 years, is seeing a divergence between the baseline supply of truck drivers and the demand for truck drivers. According to their research, they project a demand of 1.65 million truck drivers yet a supply of only 1.45 million truck drivers*. And looking at the trend supply, the divergence is only going to grow for the foreseeable future.

As the economy is seemingly getting better as a whole, there are still a significant amount of people who are struggling to find work while there are numerous jobs needing to be filled in the trucking industry.
Historically, the commercial trucking industry has been overwhelmingly dominated by men. But many people don’t realize that women have a significant presence in the commercial trucking industry, and that their number are increasing every year. The truth is, women are needed to join this industry.
At some point or another everything you consume, utilize and wear has been in contact with a truck. Truck drivers are what keep America moving and are the catalysts for supply chains to continue functioning and stay in business. Yet trucking companies all over America are experiencing a shortage of drivers like never before.
For many prospective CDL students, one of the biggest concerns they have when beginning the program is how their future career as a commercial truck driver will impact their lifestyle. Although it may be difficult to stay active and maintain a balanced diet, there are plenty of effective strategies that truck drivers can employ in order to stay fit while on the road. Here are a few tips for living a healthy lifestyle while spending hours on end inside your vehicle.
Resist the Urge to Eat Fast Food & Choose Healthy Snacks
There is a shortage of qualified commercial truck drivers in the United States, and it is only expected to get worse in the future. By some estimates, the current shortage of drivers is predicted to exceed 300,000 drivers by the year 2020. Fortunately, Smith & Solomon gives every graduate the training, tools and resources needed to land a job once they enter the market.
Linden, New Jersey, November 18, 2013: The CVTA (Commercial Vehicle Training Association) held their fall 2013 conference last month in Washington, D.C. where the announcement that John Diab, COO of Smith & Solomon Commercial Driver Training will sit as their new Board of Directors Chairman.
As of January 30, 2012 it is required for all CDL holders to provide a copy of their Medical Examiner’s Certificate (also known as a DOT card), as well as provide the type of commercial motor vehicle operation they drive in (or expect to drive in). This information must be submitted to your state’s respective motor vehicle agency by no later than January 30, 2014.
Examples of different operations that must be reported are the following:
