CDL Jobs That Don't Have You Over-the-Road.

CDL, Trucking, truck driving, CDL training, Smith & Solomon

Most of the jobs you hear about while obtaining your commercial driver’s license are those that require you to drive over-the-road, and it’s true that most people who begin their career in trucking often start off with driving long hauls. This is for the reasons that the experience gained from driving over the road is immense, and/or an individual is sold on a life where they are traveling the country and are free from a 9 to 5 job.

As true as it is that over-the-road driving is recommended when beginning your trucking career, another truth is that there are several other CDL-related positions that do not involve over the road driving, and some, not requiring you to drive at all.  Having some driving experience will surely maximize your chances as a candidate for these various CDL-related positions, so should you already have some under your belt or are currently obtaining that experience, these are positions to consider as a CDL holder:

- Local/Regional Driver (specialty cargo hauler, delivery driver, etc.)

- Supervisor/Manager (e.g., construction sites)

- Recruiter

- CDL instructor

- Mechanic

- Courier

- Terminal Manager

- Owner/Operator (self-employer truck driver)

- Bus Driver

- Dispatcher/Logistics Coordinator

- Switcher

If you already have your commercial driver’s license, but haven’t put it to use, we hope this article is informational to you.  If you’ve been contemplating a career in trucking and weren’t educated about the different career opportunities that are made available to you once you have your CDL, then give us a call at 1-800-622-0355 and let us help you take that first step in the right direction of a secure, family sustaining career!
