A Commercial Truck Driver’s Guide to Passing the Time on the Open Road

If you have your commercial truck driver’s license or are thinking about getting one soon, it’s a good idea to start thinking about how you want to pass the time on the road.  Some truckers take up hobbies, while others catch up on sleep.  Here is a list of some of the most common things that truckers do to enjoy down time.

Pursue a hobby

Think about the hobbies that you have always wanted to take up. If you are commercial truck driver, you will have the time to take up many of these new hobbies. Some truckers have taken up stitching, skydiving, photography, and even opera.

Audio Books and Reading

Commercial truck drivers are typically adventurous people, as they have chosen a job that lets them see places all over the state or even the country.  If you love to enjoy a good adventure while you’re on the road, you can pop in an audiobook.  If you’re stopped at a warehouse or a truck stop, you can read an actual book or a virtual book on you kindle if you don’t want to carry about multiple books.

Listening to the Radio

While you’re on the road or at a truck stop, you can listen to talk radio or play some of your favorite music.  If you want to discover new artists when you’re on the road, and you have a smart phone, consider downloading a digital music service application such as Pandora or Spotify.

If you’ve been behind the wheel for a long time, there’s nothing like getting into your sleeper cabin and catching some extra sleep.  Not only will this leave you refreshed and healthy for the next leg of the drive, but it will also increase your safety of others on the road.
